How To Keep Your Health Sanity During March Madness | GVSU

We’re already over a week into the NCAA March Madness basketball tournament, and chances are your bracket is going about as well as that New Years Resolution diet you gave up on last month. The stress of constant game upsets, last minute shots, and overtimes, can tempt you into stress eating or other equally unhealthy habits. Here are some tips to help you and your family stay healthy and happy during this exciting month for college basketball.

  1. Create a March Madness Fitness Challenge and Compete with Friends and Family Design a workout regime that involves daily cardiovascular and muscular training exercises that basketball players would use, and do them before, during, or after a game. Perhaps you set “10 sprints for every time out called” or “5 pushups every time your favorite player makes a 3”. Keep track and try to beat your score next time!

  2. Get Some Shots Up What better way to get in the spirit than grabbing a basketball and heading to the nearest outdoor hoop? Start a game of pick up, or shoot around in between college games.

  3. Host a March Madness Potluck Party Invite your friends to bring healthy, portioned snacks and low calorie desserts to watch a big game. Maybe even make a smoothie bar with fresh fruits and vegetables. Get creative and name your dishes after teams and players!

  4. Watch the Game From Your Local Gym Who says you have to be stationed on the couch to watch the game? Head to the gym and watch it while jogging on the treadmill or riding the stationary bike. If it’s nice out, head outside for a run and listen to it on the radio.

  5. Take a Victory Lap Every time your team wins, take a victory lap around your neighborhood. Vary the distance depending on your level of running and activity. A big win may call for a 3 mile victory lap!

However you prefer to keep up with sports, remember that at the end of the day, it’s just a game. Work and school can be stressful enough as it is, keep the mood light and don’t let the stress of March Madness games affect your anxiety. Enjoy!
